US rock band Linkin Park has announced that Emily Armstrong will be their new lead singer for their upcoming album and tour.
The band’s former lead singer, Chester Bennington, sadly died in 2017.
Armstrong will join returning members Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Phoenix, and Joe Hahn for the band’s upcoming projects.
Armstrong will share vocal duties with Shinoda, and Colin Brittain will join as the band’s new drummer.
The band unveiled its new lineup just ahead of the release of its upcoming album, From Zero, and the kickoff of its new world tour.
Armstrong, raised in Los Angeles, is most recognized as the lead singer of the alt-rock band Dead Sara. She helped start the band with guitarist Siouxsie Medley in 2005.
In a Billboard interview, Armstrong shared how Linkin Park’s 2000 album Hybrid Theory had a significant impact on her.
“I was in a band when it came out,” she remembered. “One Step Closer was my favorite track, and I thought, ‘That’s exactly what I want to do.’ As a singer, I wanted to be able to scream like that.”
That album was everything—I’ve listened to it a million times. I’d skate to it and mosh to it.
In a time when solo artists rule, Linkin Park shines as one of the most successful bands of the streaming era.
They are the only band in Spotify’s top 10 most-streamed albums of all time, with their most excellent hits collection, Papercuts, pulling in over 9 million streams a day.
Linkin Park isn’t the first band to bring in a new lead singer after losing their frontman—Alice in Chains and Sublime have done it before.
Following Freddie Mercury’s death in 1991, Queen has toured extensively with singer Adam Mercury in recent years.
Meanwhile, Brittain will be stepping in for the band’s former drummer, Rob Bourdon.
Speaking to Billboard, Shinoda explained, “Rob told us some time ago that he wanted to put some distance between himself and the band.”
And we understood that it was becoming apparent. He was showing up less staying in touchless, and I know the fans noticed it, too
